Text · what Yapify reads

From a picture of text to a voice.

  1. Get it as a PDF

From the library scanner, your course page, or your iPhone: in the Notes app, Scan Documents, then share it as a PDF.

  2. Open it in Yapify

Every page goes through text recognition first, so the words are real text. Then it starts reading.

  3. Follow along

Text lights up each word as it's read. Original shows the scan itself and turns the pages with the voice.

What it reads, and what it can't.

Reads well

  • Printed pages and photocopiesHandouts, book chapters, journal articles from the library.
  • Headings and page furnitureHeadings kept; running heads and page numbers left out of the audio.
  • FootnotesRecognised as footnotes, so you can skip them while you listen.
  • Old booksTested on a scan of The Odyssey in Butler's 1900 translation.

Not in this version

  • HandwritingHandwritten notes aren't read.
  • Taking a photo in YapifyMake a PDF first, with your phone's scanner.
  • Faint or blurred pagesRead, but expect a few wrong words. The Text view shows exactly what it will say.

Questions, answered.

How do I know it read a page right?

The Text view shows exactly what Yapify recognised and reads, with each word lit up as it's spoken. Switch to Original to compare with the scan.

Can I take a photo of a page?

Not inside Yapify yet. Scan it into a PDF first: in the iPhone's Notes app, tap Scan Documents, then share it as a PDF to Yapify.

Does it read handwriting?

No. It reads printed and typed text.

Which languages?

English at launch.

Is it free?

Yes, to start: about 3.5 hours of listening a month. Scanned pages cost the same as any other.
